Skoda Enyaq new #1

In the context of a falling overall market, down 7% YoY in April, the Dutch plugin vehicle (PEV) market has continued to grow, reaching 33% last month. That’s mostly thanks to pure electrics (20% of all new vehicle sales), which surged 98% year over year (YoY) last month. Overall, the YTD market share for plugin vehicles rose to 30% (17% BEV).

The Skoda Enyaq won April’s best seller race, with the 869 registrations made last month allowing it to also be #1 in the overall ranking! The Czech model was followed by the Lynk & Co 01 PHEV, which scored 691 registrations, earning it the 4th spot overall.
Completing the podium, we have Lynk & Co’s Swedish cousin, the Volvo XC40 PHEV, which managed to overcome the #4 Kia EV6, with the sporty Korean ending the month with a year-best result of 338 registrations.
A few more models in the top 10 scored year-best results. Highlighting the good moment BEVs are having in this market, the #5 Peugeot e-208 EV had 324 deliveries, with the French hatchback being the only representative of its category in the top 20. The Polestar 2 was 7th, with 210 registrations, with the stylish fastback profiting from the cheaper versions to increase sales, and in 8th we have the stylish Cupra Born, with 188 registrations, a new year best for the Spanish EV.

In the second half of the table, the highlight is the arrival of SAIC’s MG 5, a compact electric station wagon that has its market segment all to itself. Expect it to become a familiar face here.
Outside the top 20, April saw the landing of the much awaited Mercedes EQE, a model with awfully long shoes to fill — after all, it only has to replace the Mercedes E-Class, the perennial global leader in the full size category. Further ahead, there will be time to see if the EQE has what it takes to reach the levels of the current full size global leaders, like the BYD Han or XPeng P7, but for now, let’s celebrate its first 23 registrations in the Netherlands, with many no doubt being demonstration models. For comparison’s sake, the current leaders in this market, the Audi e-tron (67 units in April), BMW iX (65), and Mercedes EQS (39) do seem easily attainable for the new three-pointed-star baby. Maybe we will even see it in the top 20 in a few months?…

Looking at the 2022 ranking, the Skoda Enyaq benefitted from a strong month to jump two positions and reach the leadership spot. If production constraints don’t stop it, the Czech now seems the most likely candidate for the 2022 best seller title.
The Czech model is followed by the Lynk & Co 01 PHEV and Volvo XC40 PHEV. The Chinese brand is proving to be a winning bet by Geely’s management.
Down below, we see the Kia EV6 and Peugeot e-208 EV climbing to 7th and 8th, respectively, with both models leading their respective categories (midsize/D-segment & subcompact/B-segment).

In the second half of the table, Geely–Volvo Group had two models going upwards. The Volvo XC40 BEV climbed one position, to #11, while its sportier cousin, the Polestar 2, jumped to #14.

In the manufacturer ranking, leader Volvo (12.6%) gained some ground over runner-up BMW (9%). Meanwhile, a rising Kia (8.4%) is comfortable in the last place on the podium.
Outside the podium, Skoda (6.7%) is profiting from the Enyaq success to surpass Mercedes (6.4), becoming the new 4th placed.

As for OEMs, Volkswagen Group (20.9%) is still in the leadership position, but runner-up Geely–Volvo (19.7%, parent company of Volvo, Polestar, and Lynk & Co) still has the German group within range, so we should have a close OEM duel to follow in the coming months.
Stellantis (14.3%) stayed firm in 3rd, while a rising Hyundai–Kia (12.7) is looking to reach the podium by the end of the year.
Finally, in 5th, we have BMW Group (11.5%) keeping a safe distance from its arch-rival Mercedes Group.
