Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported YouTube was looking to hire an executive that could oversee its podcast business. At the time, the company confirmed that it was looking for an executive who could oversee and manage the company’s existing podcasting business.
And it looks like YouTube found its person — without having to go far.
Kai Chuk, who served as the director or digital media and enterprise partnerships at YouTube, will move into the “Podcast Lead” role, The Verge reports. According to Chuk’s LinkedIn, the executive joined YouTube in 2012, where he first served as the head of North American entertainment partnerships. Before that, he worked at Bain & Company and MTV Networks.

The hiring comes as Spotify, the streaming audio giant, announced it would allow more podcast creators to upload video podcasts on the platform. At the moment, only “The Joe Rogan Experience” and “Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay” offer video podcasts on Spotify.
With its lengthy upload limits, YouTube became the defacto home for video podcasts. The medium even attracted popular YouTube personalities, including Jake Paul and H3H3. But in comparison to Spotify, YouTube only allows Premium users to stream audio only from podcasts. In some instances, this requires podcast fans to switch between apps for audio and video versions of podcasts.
However, this may soon change. YouTube said it would start offering free, background music listening in its YouTube Music app, starting in Canada. Google offers the “Google Podcasts” app, but it has failed to gain significant traction as a directory, with a 2.6% market share. A merger of both apps may make sense and it could be Chuk’s task to figure out that strategy.
